Nearly 60 Randall Consolidated School seventh-grade students embarked on an outdoor adventure near the Wisconsin Dells, where they engaged in a variety of educational activities from Oct. 5 through Oct. 7.

The students, with help from nine Randall faculty members, started with a geological exploration of Cave of the Mounds in Mount Horeb, followed by a geological expedition at Devil’s Lake State Park.

A two-day stay at Camp Upham Woods, where they bolstered problem-solving skills, capped off the three-day educational adventure.

According to School Principal Erin Zigler, the annual event gives students a hands-on experience.

“At Cave of the Mounds, students learn about the geology of caves, how caves are formed, and the structures that make-up the cave environment,” she said. “Students get to tour the cave and experience phosphorescence rocks and total darkness while in the cave.”

After the departed the cave, students and staff went on a hiking trip at Devil’s Lake State Park, where they absorbed the environmental surroundings.

“(They) learn about the rock formations as well as how Devil’s Lake was formed,” said Zigler, who reported they went to Camp Upham Woods following the hike.

At Camp Upham Woods, students and staff spent two days engaging in problem-solving and team-building activities.

Team activities involved a challenge course, a STEM activity, digital technology aspects, rowing, a pond study, archery safety and an informational presentation on birds.

“Overall, it is an amazing experience for students, taking education outdoors,” Zigler said.
