Falcons sweep Wilmot
Host Westosha Central capitalized on early serving errors by the Panthers en route to a 3-0 sweep Oct. 13.

The Falcons, who jumped to 7-0 in the SLC, captured the first two sets 25-19, 25-20 before Wilmot cleaned up its errors in the third match.

“In the first two sets, but they gave themselves a better chance to compete in that third set,” said Falcons coach Wayne Schultz.

In the third set, Wilmot produced an early 9-7 lead, but eventually lost 25-22.

Schultz credited Falcons’ sophomore Alex Salerno, who finished with seven kills, 10 digs, two aces and three blocks, for stepping up in crucial moments of the contest.

“Alex played fantastic, his defense was great, he got some really nice and then offensively put some balls away for us,” Schultz said.

Junior Connor Muff, who led with 34 assists, agreed.

“Alex has grown so much throughout the season, and it is going to be fun playing with him in the future,” Muff said.

Other leaders were junior Jack Polick (four assists, 12 digs), senior Drake Muhlenbeck (11 kills, 11 digs), Mason Welter (11 kills), senior Brett Niederer (two aces) and junior Jason Olson (three blocks).

According to Panthers coach Dave Reidl, the team could not keep up with the Falcons well-balanced attack.

“They are a competitive team, they work hard and they are not going to make a lot of mistakes,” Reidl said.

The loss drops Wilmot to 4-3, second in the SLC.
