Entering Thursday’s WIAA Division 2 regional contest at No. 4 Monona Grove, Wilmot Union High School already had an uphill battle as the No. 13 seed, but after a promising first half the Panthers pulled off a stunning upset Thursday.

The Panthers, who carried a 5-11-3 overall record into the match, came into halftime with a 2-2 deadlock, courtesy of goals by Anthony Poco and Ryan Buchta.

But, Wilmot clamped down defensively in the second half, when Poco netted the decisive goal to put away the 8-5-2 Talons, who finished second in the Badger South Conference.

Picking up assists were Jonathan Mendez and Tim Freeman.

The upset is the Panthers’ first postseason win since 2014, when they shutout Southern Lakes Conference rival Waterford 2-0.

Next for Wilmot is a regional title match 7 p.m. Saturday at Milton, who ended the Panthers season last year, when Milton won 3-1.

Milton, a No. 5 seed after a 9-6-1 season, defeated Westosha Central 3-1 in the first round.
