Head lice reported at Bristol School

BREAKINGNEWS-webWith multiple cases of head lice reported at Bristol Consolidated School, officials at the school are advising parents to keep an eye on their children, and to keep them home if they are either symptomatic or have a confirmed case.

“There have been several cases of head lice in our school,” the letter stated. “It is recommended that you check your child every few days for signs of head lice and continue to do so periodically for the next few weeks.”

Head lice, according to the letter, are tiny light gray to brown insects which lay their eggs (nits) on the hair shaft close to the scalp most often found behind the ears and in the neck area.

“Unlike dandruff, the nits adhere tightly to the hair shaft and are difficult to remove. They are not caused by lack of cleanliness and anyone can catch them. Head lice are easily transmitted from person-to-person by sharing personal items such as combs, hats, and clothing, as well as close contact,” the letter stated, adding animals do not transmit lice, nor do lice jump from person to person.

Symptoms include head scratching and intense itching of the scalp, the letter stated.

“Their presence can be confirmed by close visual inspection – look for the insects, as well as their eggs,” the letter stated.

If parents find lice, they are advised to keep children home until they have been treated with an anti-lice shampoo, the letter stated.

The shampoo, pediculocide, is obtained over the counter at any pharmacy or through a prescription by a physician.

“Be sure to follow the directions for cleaning clothing, bedding, and household items,” the release said.

“Follow the medication directions carefully and REMOVE ALL NITS as some may survive the treatment,” the letter said. “Per policy of the Bristol School District, all nits must be removed before students return to school.”

If parents have any questions, call the Kenosha County Health Department at 1-800-472-8008 or the school nurse.
