When Wilmot Union High School hired Erin Cullen as Communications Coordinator, District Administrator Daniel Kopp believed she had the creativity to share highlights of the school, which recently received two Wisconsin School Public Relations Association awards in Sheboygan.

The accolades, known as the Spectrum Award of Excellence, were given to Wilmot for a promotional video showcasing the school’s accomplishments and a marketing drive in the community.

“Spectrum Awards recognize high-quality public relations efforts produced by or on behalf of Wisconsin school districts,” a press release stated, noting the statewide competition honored 30 schools districts with 62 awards of 96 entries.

The Spectrum Awards are judged by members of the Illinois School Public Relations Association on a four-point scale in four areas: goals and objectives, research and planning, execution and evaluation and results.

“I do not think I can quantify the amount of work, but I can definitely determine it to be creative and her approach to telling our story is comprehensive,” Kopp said. “We envisioned this when we hired her and she has exceeded our expectations.”

The comprehensive approach started when Cullen showcased the award-winning promotional video on social media in May, produced by Wilmot alum BJ Rayniak of RayniDay Productions.

The video shows aerial footage of the school, along with academic highlights and interviews with staff, students and parents.

“(BJ) did an outstanding job and deserves the credit for this video!” said Cullen, who felt humbled when she accepted the award on behalf of the school.

“I felt extremely honored to accept the awards on behalf of Wilmot,” she said. “I absolutely love my job – coming to work every day to share the story of Wilmot is amazing!”

Along with the promotional video, the school received a Spectrum Award for Marketing Material, which was for the Advanced Placement 5 Signs the school placed on the front lawns of students who scored a 5 on their exams in the summer.

However, the award would not have been possible without the help of faculty members, including administrators.

“Teachers and Administrators personally deliver and install the yard signs to each student’s home,” said Cullen. “It was an awesome experience.”

Furthermore, Cullen credited the community for giving her the tools to assemble school promotional activities.

“What the students, staff and community members accomplish on a daily basis are remarkable,” she said. “Being able to acknowledge these accomplishments and highlight our district is a blessing.”

Kopp agreed, adding the school has plenty of achievements to note, which is noted through Cullen’s work.

“We have a great story to tell and Mrs. Cullen has done an excellent job promoting the great things our kids and staff are doing,” said Kopp.
