Pick a player, any player, all to help benefit their Wilmot Union High School boys basketball program.

The players, who will participate in the first annual Free-Throw-a-Thon, plan to open the doors to practice Saturday, Dec. 10.

Members of area travel teams, feeder schools, parents, community members and anyone interested in learning more about the program are invited to attend the practice scheduled from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The free throw fundraiser will follow.

According to coach Jake Erbentraut, the idea came from his tenure as an assistant coach at Lake Geneva Badger, where they held a similar event.

“It was something that I’ve wanted to implement here since I arrived,” he said. “It was a lot of fun and the players were able to use this as a community service project.”

Funds brought in by members of the community will go to expenses associated with the program, Erbentraut added.

It is the program’s second unique fundraiser with hands-on player involvement, starting with last year’s Mighty Mite basketball camp, when junior varsity and varsity players helped coaches mentor children in kindergarten through second grade.

For the free throw fundraiser, set to begin after the team’s 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. practice, sponsored players plan to appear at the free throw line, where they will attempt 100 free throws.

“If they know a player, they can contributed based on that player making 100 free throws, or can simply make a flat donation,” said Erbentraut, noting community members can either send a check payable to Wilmot High School or go the program’s GoFundMe.com page.

Sponsors can donate as high as $2 per free throw to as low as $.20 for the free throw contest.

Since this is the first event, Erbentraut said they do not have a specific target for funds brought in.

“Considering we haven’t done this yet, I haven’t created a goal,” he said. “We’re just hoping to raise funds for the players.”
