GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wilmot wallops Elkhorn

WilmotLarge-webAfter suffering a Southern Lakes Conference opening loss to Waterford Union High School Dec. 2, the Wilmot Union High School girls basketball team responded with two consecutive wins, including an 80-20 pounding of Elkhorn Friday.

The Panthers, who defeated non conference opponent The Prairie School 51-39 Dec. 6, carried a 52-13 lead into halftime against Elkhorn.

While Wilmot received a double-double performance by 5-foot-10 senior Delaney Sjong, who knocked in 10 points and collected 11 rebounds, the Panthers were led by bench players Riley Alexander and Julia Hickey.

Alexander, a 5-2 sophomore guard, went 5 of 8 from field goal range, including 4 of 5 from the perimeter en route to a team-leading 14 points.

Additionally, Alexander chipped in four assists and added four steals.

Meanwhile, for Hickey, a 5-2 freshman, she made all three of her 3-point attempts and went 4 for 5 overall.

Hickey had three assists and two steals.

Along with Sjong, 5-foot-11 junior forward Morgan Zenon contributed in the post, collecting seven rebounds and had 10 points.

Defensively, senior 5-2 guard McKenna Stanek and sophomore 5-2 guard Haley Lamberson picked up a team-leading five steals.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 5-1 (2-1 SLC) while Elkhorn remained winless.

Ryley Rand scored a team-leading six points for Elkhorn.

Wilmot 51, The Prairie School 39
Earlier in the week, the Panthers defeated Racine Prairie 51-39 on Dec. 6, when they took a 27-19 lead entering the second half.

Wilmot received contributions from Sjong (15 points, seven rebounds, three assists) and 5-6 senior guard Devin Coleman (12 points, 5-5 in free throws).

Lamberson added a team-leading three steals, knocked in five points and pitched in two assists.

Wilmot jumped to 4-1 overall after the victory, which dropped Prairie to 1-2.
Leading Prairie in scoring were Jolie Larson (12) and Brooke Foster (11).
