Johnsburg Public Library announces April events

                  Johnsburg Public Library is offering the following events in April:

                  • Frog Weirdos, Saturday, April 7, 2 p.m. Event is for ages 2 and up.

                  Meet one of the strangest and coolest groups of animals on the planet­–the frogs.

                  Award-winning naturalist, Deb Krohn (aka “The Frog Lady”), will introduce some of her live amphibian friends, and fill participants in on all kinds of fun frog facts. Advance registration is required.

                  • Titanic: The Great Lakes Connection, Wednesday, April 11, 7 p.m.

                  In April 1912, on the maiden voyage of the Titanic, 345 of her passengers were bound for the Great Lakes region. Some were returning to their homes; others hoped to settle in a new land. Some survived the tragedy while others never reached their goals.

                  This presentation tells many of their stories, plus tales of Titanic’s Great Lakes counterpart ship, artists with strong Titanic-Great Lakes connections, the Great Lakes writer who predicted Titanic’s loss 14 years earlier and consequences to Great Lakes shipping because of Titanic’s sinking. Advance registration is required.

                  About the presenters: Chris Kohl and Joan Forsberg are maritime historians, scuba divers, authors, photographers and videographers whose passion is exploring shipwrecks, particularly those in the Great Lakes.

                  • Silly Storytime Fun, Saturday, April 14, 1 p.m. Ages 5 and up.

                  Balloon artist and storyteller Holly Nagel will delight you as she shares tales and songs using balloons, gourds, paper and whatever else tickles her fancy. Advance registration is required.

                  • Solar Hot Water Savings, Tuesday, April 17, 7 p.m.

                  Solar water heaters can be a cost-effective way to provide hot water for your home, and can be used in any climate. This informational seminar will cover active and passive systems, installation and system costs and potential savings. Registration begins April 1.

                  About the presenter: Johnsburg resident Walter Sieverin is a retired licensed professional engineer with multiple degrees in mechanical engineering. A lifelong inventor, he is the author of numerous patents in the field.

                  • Bingo for Adults, Thursday, April 19, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Ages 18 and up.

                  Get out of the house this winter and enjoy an hour of bingo fun. Bring along a wrapped or bagged white elephant item (something you just have to get rid of) to add to our prize table. Registration is required and starts April 1.

                  • Gardening Series: Part 3, Wednesday, April 25, 7 p.m.

                  This “Into the Garden” series is presented by the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners Bruce Harmel, Barbara Harmel and Ed Schuckert.

                  Session III topics include:

                  • when to uncover plants;

                  • when and how to plant cool weather vegetables and strawberries;

                  • when and how to spray for apple scab;

                  • when to move shrubs and trees;

                  • when and how to divide perennials;

                  • pruning roses: determining which ones need it;

                  • fertilizing, weed control, lawn mowing begins.

                  Advance registration is required and begins on April 1.
