Historical Society selects theme for Heritage Fair

The McHenry County Historical Society presents its 27th Annual Heritage Fair on Sunday July 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the museum grounds at 6422 Main Street in Union.

The theme this year is “Hats Off to Hometowns.” Visitors are encouraged to wear fun and unique-themed hats while visiting the fair.

There is no charge for admission or entertainment. The featured entertainment this year is The Clef Hangers Barbershop Quartet and Freddy Fredricks Magic Show.

Throughout the day there will be sales of baked goods, vintage clothing, garden plants and an indoor used book and white elephant sale.

Visitors are invited indoors to view the featured exhibit honoring the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts.  Fair organizers are seeking items for sales, particularly auction donations that should be dated before 1950.

For more information about the Historical Society’s “Hats Off to Hometowns” Heritage Fair contact the Society at (815) 923-2267 or e-mail [email protected].

Gear up for Historical Society’s Garden Glitz

The Garden Glitz would like to get a head start for this July’s Heritage Fair. The Garden Glitz sale features plants ready for transplant donated by local gardeners.

As gardeners trim, thin and transplant in spring gardens, please keep this upcoming garden sale in mind. Before dumping any trimmings in a compost pile, consider planting a few in containers for this sale. Containers need not be fancy. The Historical Society can even assist by sharing leftover pots. Herb plants are particularly desirable. Let Garden Glitz find a home for your garden orphans.

Believe it or not, pickers come in the garden variety as well. Your patio or garden accessories may have lost their luster, but the garden pickers see art and promise in them.

Bring cast-off garden tools, decorations, architecture and furniture to the McHenry County Historical Society. The Garden Glitz will give them a chance at a second life at the Heritage Fair. For more about the Garden Glitz or to make a contribution, call the Society at (815) 923-2267.
