County Highway K should reopen soon

An unanticipated closure of County Highway K at I-94 will continue for three weeks, according to Kenosha County Highway Commissioner Gary Sipsma.

Sipsma said the Wisconsin Department of Transportation had determined it necessary to close CTH K as part of the I-94 overpass bridge construction.

WIDOT recently determined that when the new bridge beams are installed, the beams will be too low for trucks and emergency vehicles to pass under.  The future CTH “K” is planned to be approximately 4-feet lower than existing so the beam height is being installed accordingly.

WIDOT originally planned on doing the County K reconstruction (lowering) in 2013 requiring County K at I-94 to be closed for until 2013. Citing the widespread highway construction activities in eastern Kenosha County, county officials determined the long term CTH K closure to be unacceptable for motorists, Sipsma said.

After some discussion, WIDOT has agreed to construct a temporary roadway under the bridge at a height that would allow trucks and emergency vehicles to pass under, said Sipsma.

CTH K at I-94 will re-open to all motorists in early July, Sipsma said.
