Drought conditions in many parts of Wisconsin have left pastures dried up and non-productive, while pastures in some areas to the north have had more rainfall.
“For some producers, relocating livestock might be an effective strategy for them,” said Rhonda Gildersleeve, University of Wisconsin-Extension grazing specialist.
She noted that the Farmer to Farmer Corn and Forage website, an electronic neighborhood bulletin board that allows local farmers to get in touch with one another to facilitate the marketing of feed commodities, has been expanded to connect those with productive pastures to those producers who are in need of pastures.
The site developed and supported by UW-Extension, can be found athttp://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu. This site is only designed to facilitate the farmer-to-farmer connection and initial communication.
If someone has pasture in good condition and is willing to consider renting/leasing it to a producer who needs pasture, that information can be entered on the site to make a farmer-to-farmer connection.
If someone is in need of pasture, the details of that need can be posted on the site.
Gildersleeve added, “Producers should consult with their veterinarian, attorney, and/or accountant for more detailed information about appropriate biosecurity/animal health practices associated with moving animals as well as fair and complete lease agreements.”
