Kenosha County Fair opens Aug. 15

Happily, it happens every year and depending on who you ask, it’s the Midway, it’s the food, it’s the livestock, it’s the entertainment.

One thing is for sure, from Aug. 15 through Aug. 19, what “it” is, you will find it at the fairgrounds, 30820 111th St. in Wilmot.

Open class judging begins Wednesday, Aug. 15, which is also Senior Citizens Day, which comes with a $6 admission price for seniors.

The Fairest of the Fair will be crowned at 9 p.m. This year there are six contestants, so there one will be eliminated, leaving five to serve as the Fairest of the Fair and her court.

Carley Bevry, who turns 19 the first day of the fair, is from Bristol and is the daughter of Ken and Connie Bevry. She is also a graduate of Westosha High school.

This year’s contestants are Jennifer Happ, 21, of Burlington and the daughter of Kenneth and Patricia Happ. She is a Wilmot High  School graduate.

Amber Leahy, 20, of Trevor, is the daughter of John and Elizabeth Leahy and a graduate of Wilmot Union High School.

Ashley Marchetti, 18, of Salem, is the daughter of Lisa and Travis Marchetti and graduated from Westosha Central High School.

Holly Weis, 20, of Union Grove, and the daughter of Tim and Jane Weis. She is a Westosha Central High school graduate.

Jordan Venem, 19, of Trevor, daughter of Cindi Venem and a graduate of WHS.

All contestants have indicated they are attending the university of their choice in the fall. They will be judged on six different categories: personality and attitude, maturity, professionalism, speaking ability, poise and involvement and activities.

Many favorites return for daily performances, including Watson Woods Chain Saw Artist, Barnyard Farm Fun and Petting Zoo, Nick’s Kids Show, Barnyard Revue, Close Encounter of the Exotic Kind, Ta Da the Clown and Roving Robots, the Jim Mitchell Magic Show, Morrison’s Enormous Elephants, Robinson’s Racing Pigs, American Legion Beer Garden, Miller Lite Creek Side Stage and Family Rest Area and the always popular Bingo by Kenosha Area Family and Aging Services Inc.

The always-popular pedal tractor pull is Thursday at 11a.m. with registration at 10 a.m.

On Wednesday and Thursday nights the truck and tractor pull and combine demo derby will take center stage on the racetrack.

On Wednesday the wristband special will be offered 4 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday the wristband special is 1 to 6 p.m. On Friday there will be reduced prices on most rides from noon to 6 p.m.

Friday at 10:30 a.m. the children’s parade will be held, for ages 14 and under Entrance to the fair is free for children in costume. The parade is held at the Southeast entry gate by the high school. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

On Friday night the Sprints, Pro 4’s and the legendary Green Mamba Jet Rocket Thrill Show will begin at 7 p.m. On Saturday the IRA Outlaw Spring Roger Lies Tribute will be held.

Throughout the fair there will be live music and demonstrations, the livestock auction begins at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Admission for adults 12 and older: $9 daily; children ages 8-11 years old: $5 daily and children under 7, free.

Senior Citizen Day (older than 62) is Wednesday for $6.

On Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, admission is $5 with two cans of a non-perishable food item.

Races Friday and Saturday require a $5 grandstand fee. All other entertainment is free with paid admission. As always, parking is free.
