Before you burn, review the village regulations

It’s that time of year again where you could find yourself raking leaves one day and cranking up the snow blower the next. It’s also a good time to review the regulations set by the Village of Twin Lakes to avoid any unwanted citations.

For those working in their yards, remember grass clippings, leaves, and brush under 6 inch in diameter can be dropped off at the Twin Lakes Recycling Center from April to November from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays.

To dispose of grass clippings, leaves, and/or brush outside the Recycling Center’s hours of operation, call Production Unlimited Holsteins 279-3472 or 877-3092 (for directions); Les Skinner 877-2769   1250 Lance Drive; $1 per bag, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Burning is discouraged by the Village of Twin Lakes and the Department of Natural Resources.

However, if you are going to burn leaves and plant clippings, (not wood) remember it is allowed only on private property, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sept. 1 through May 31.

It is against the law to burn in ditches, drainage ways, on pavement or in barrels. The village also asks that residents follow the good neighbor rule and be aware which way the wind is blowing and if the smoke is bothering your neighbors, especially those with breathing difficulties.

For more information on burning, contact the Village Hall (262-877-2858) or refer to the Village’s pamphlet on burning regulations.

Snow!

You know it’s out there, just waiting. It’s going to snow at some point…this is Wisconsin after all. It’s important to remember there is no parking on village streets after a 2-inch snowfall. This allows the plows to get through. Also, residents are reminded not to place snow from driveways in the street.

The Village policy is for “passable roads” and does not call for roads to be completely cleared of snow and ice.  Clearing practices will not begin until an accumulation of two inches has been reached for a given event.  The Village does pre-salt as appropriate, with salt to be used only at intersections, significant curves, hills and other similar traffic hazard locations.

If your mailbox is damaged due to plowing, you must report it within two days of the incident or prior to making any repairs or replacements. Call the village hall at 877-2858 to report the incident. The Village will reimburse up to $50 for repair or replacement of a mailbox damaged by Village operations.

Sidewalks: Regulations require that property owners or residents must remove the snow and ice from the sidewalks adjacent to the property they own or occupy.

Removal of snow and ice from sidewalks must occur within 24 hours.

No snow, ice, or other accumulations may be deposited into the public roadway.  All snow removed from driveways, sidewalks or other areas must be kept off the street.

Vehicles must be removed from the street for 48 hours following a 2-inch or greater snowfall to allow for complete plowing operations including follow up clearing.
