Notice of lake treatment sent to riparian owners

Twin Lakes riparian owners should keep a sharp eye on their mail in upcoming weeks. The Village of Twin Lakes will be sending out notification of aquatic plant treatment that will occur sometime between May 1 and Sept. 30.

It sounds like a long stretch of time but the weather conditions have almost perfect for the lakes to be treated.

The Twin Lakes Protection & Rehabilitation District Aquatic Plants Committee has applied for a permit from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to treat up to 1.90 acres of water within Lake Mary and 23.90 acres of water within Lake Elizabeth.

The aquatic herbicides to be applied will help control Eurasian Water Milfoil.

The mailing to riparian owners will receive will include a map that indicates the areas of treatment using the herbicide 2, 4-D, together with information on Eurasian Water Milfoil.

The exact dates of treatment will be posted on the Community Event Sign at Central Park, entrances of subdivisions, shoreline areas and various areas around the lakes as well as the Village’s website www.villageoftwinlakes.net.

Additional information about the herbicide will also be available through the website.

I have been protesting the use of the controversial herbicide 2,4-D in Lake Mary and Lake Elizabeth for more than 10 years. In that time, 2,4-D has been linked to a variety of illnesses and conditions such as cancer, specifically lymphoma; parkinson’s disease, autism in children, alzheimer’s disease. Two years ago, the World Health Organization named 2,4-D as a possible carcinogen , which is the first step in naming the herbicide as “probable” and then banned. At first, we were told that the herbicide treatment would be a one-year thing to eradicate the milfoil. Obviously eradication has not occurred .
and this year, another herbicide will be used in Lake Elizabeth to kill native plants which have always been present.
Nearby Paddock Lake uses a mechanical harvester to deal with the weeds. I have suggested this to the Village trustees and lake district chairpersons to no avail. I have also asked the trustees to enact a ban on waterfront usage of lawn chemicals…again to no avail. How much herbicide is in lakes Mary and Elizabeth/ Who knows/ Testing of water and sediments is never done.
